Counterflow
A single channel video (07’00” loop) that overlaps submarine cable topology and the movement of container ships at the seven landing sites of Atlantis-2, the first fiber optic cable laid between Europe and South America, which follows the same maritime route as Ferdinand Magellan in 1519. The video shows how information capitalism relies on the extraction of material and digital goods through transoceanic infrastructures, such as container ships and submarine cables. The data was gathered from Kiln’s shipmap and TeleGeography’s submarine cable map to reconstruct the flow of material and immaterial capital in these seven sites.
