Subtle Bodies
A video essay (13’13”) that reinterprets the myth of Atlantis, invoking voices from the bottom of the sea that awaken to devour internet cables and recreate the world. The video connects the replica of Columbus’ caravels, telecommunication towers, and Civil War bunkers, portraying the idea of a border disputed by stories of migration. The video essay emerges from research on Atlantis-2, the first submarine internet cable laid between Europe and South America, following the route traced by Magellan when he circumnavigated the Earth. Filmed in technical and colonial infrastructures in Conil de la Frontera, at the Museum of Columbus’ Caravels, and at the Ocean2100 aquarium in Germany, it inserts the internet into a transatlantic genealogy of dispossession and desire, myth and technique, magic and telepathy.
